Unrest continued on college campuses across the country on May 1 amid ongoing protests against the Israel-Hamas war and students’ demands for schools to divest from Israel. After protesters took over a building on the campus of Columbia University in New York City on April 30, the school called in NYPD officers, who arrested nearly 300 people in connection with the protests there and at two other campuses, Mayor Eric Adams told the New York Times. Columbia later reverted to remote learning for the rest of the term.
Similar scenes have unfolded in recent days at the University of California, Los Angeles, where clashes between protesters led to violence, as well as Tulane University, the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Arizona. While some schools have negotiated deals with activists on campus to tamp down the demonstrations, more than 1,300 protesters on campuses nationwide had been taken into custody between April 18 and May 1, the Times reported. In many cases, police were called in to disperse demonstrators in pro-Palestinian tent encampments.
At George Washington University in Washington, D.C., on April 29, activists and students flooded into an encampment after barricades fell. The protesters seen here were reportedly among those calling for the school to divest from Israel amid the war in Gaza.
